Titanium Electrodes for Electrolyzed Water

Titanium Electrodes for Electrolyzed Water

Titanium electrodes are widely used in electrolysis applications due to their excellent properties. These electrodes are made from titanium metal, which is classified as an inert material, meaning it does not chemically react with the electrolyzed substances and remains stable throughout the process.

Titanium is a preferred material for electrodes because of its high resistance to corrosion, superior electrical conductivity, and lightweight yet strong structure. Furthermore, titanium has a high melting point, making it suitable for high-temperature processes.

These electrodes find diverse applications in industries such as chemical production, electroplating, water treatment, and semiconductor manufacturing. They can be produced in various forms, including plates, rods, tubes, and wires, depending on specific operational requirements.

The Electrolysis Process

Electrolysis occurs when an electrolytic solution or molten electrolyte is placed between two electrodes, and a voltage is applied. This causes electrons to flow from one electrode to another, facilitating the breakdown of ions in the electrolyte.

In electrolysis, one electrode acts as the cathode and the other as the anode. Electrons move from the cathode to the electrolyte, reducing metal ions or other substances in the solution. Conversely, electrons flow from the anode, causing oxidation reactions in the electrolyte, which result in the release of gases or other products.

Types of Coated Titanium Electrodes

  • Platinum-Coated Titanium Electrodes

These electrodes have a thin platinum layer applied to the surface of titanium. Platinum-coated titanium electrodes are known for their high catalytic activity, exceptional stability, and strong electrical conductivity. They are commonly used in water electrolysis, electrochemical synthesis, and oxygen reduction reactions. Additionally, these electrodes have applications in fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, and electrochemiluminescence.

  • Ruthenium-Iridium-Titanium Electrodes

These electrodes feature a coating of ruthenium and iridium on titanium. Known for their superior corrosion resistance, excellent catalytic properties, and high stability, these electrodes are frequently used in electrolysis, electrochemical synthesis, and various sensor applications. They perform particularly well in environments with high temperatures, high pressure, and acidity, offering enhanced stability and activity.

  • Iridium-Tantalum-Titanium Electrodes

Iridium and tantalum coatings on titanium form the basis for these electrodes. They exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, high conductivity, and impressive catalytic efficiency. These electrodes are widely used in electrolysis, electrochemical synthesis, and sensor applications. Additionally, they can be applied in chemical batteries, electrolytic capacitors, and electrochemical corrosion processes.
